Albinas Kuncevičius
Historian and archaeologist Albinas Kuncevičius was born on November 5, 1957, in Marijampolė. In 1975, after graduating from J. Jablonskio secondary school in Marijampolė, A. Kuncevičius began to study history at Vilnius University. From 1980 to 1988, he worked at the Lithuanian Cultural Monuments’ Protection Institution. In 1993, at Vilnius University, A. Kuncevičius defended the thesis for a Doctorate of Humanitarian Sciences (History) on “Vilniaus Žemutinės pilies kokliai” (The tiles of Vilnius Lower Castle). Since 1994, he has been working in the Department of Archaeology at Vilnius University.
The Doctor’s main area of scientific research is Lithuanian late medieval archaeology (XIII-XVI c.). In 1997-1998, he was granted a “Deutscher Akademisher Ausschedienst” scholarship and worked on stipend at Bamberg University (Germany).
A. Kuncevičius has published articles on the theme of Lithuanian medieval archaeology in the Lithuanian and foreign press. His main scientific publications – a catalogue about Vilnius city and castles tiles (in German; 1992; Duisburg) and the books Lietuvos istorija iki 1795 metų (Lithuanian history until 1795), in which he worked together with historians Z. Kiaupa and J. Kiaupienė (the article “Lithuanian prehistory”). Since 1994, he has worked to restore the Old Trakai Castle site and since 2003 – the Dubingiai Castle site.
Doctor A. Kuncevičius is the director of “The Academy of Cultural Heritage”, and since 1999, a member of the international organizational committee of castle research in the Baltic region, “Castello Maris Baltici”.
In 2005, the publishing house “Versus aureus” published the study of Albinas Kuncevičius, Lietuvos viduramžių archeologija (The Medieval Archaeology of Lithuania). The monograph is composed in accordance with the research material of archeological monuments during the height of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the XIII century to the middle of the XVI century.
