Andrius Surgailis
Andrius Surgailis was born in 1955 in Vilnius. From 1974 to 1979, he studied stained glass at the Vilnius Institute of Fine Arts. Currently, he is a lecturer at the Department of Photography and Media Art at the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts. He created the photographic series, Šviesa (Light), Vilnius nuo stogo: 1972-1986 (Vilnius from the roof: 1972-1986) and Laiminga provincija (The happy province).
The Artist-photographer has organized more than twelve personal exhibitions and has participated in ten sectional exhibitions in various Lithuanian towns.
In 2006, together with the album of photographs Medinis Vilnius (Wooden Vilnius), A. Surgailis presented a supplementary exhibition Nykstantis medinis Vilnius (The Vanishing wooden Vilnius). There were one hundred photographs of the wooden architecture’s heritage depicting its relentless vanishing or even complete destruction. In parallel with the exhibition, a contest of students’ works from eighteen Vilnius schools was also arranged.
