Politician Eugenijus Gentvilas was born on March 14, 1960, in Telšiai.

He studied in the Nature faculty at Vilnius University, specializing in geography. From 1983 to 1990, he worked as a researcher in the Academy of Sciences. From 1993 to 1996, he lectured at Klaipėda University. In 1993, he defended his Doctoral thesis.

E. Gentvilas started his political career as a member of The Supreme Council of the Reconstituted Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania (1990 – 1992). He is a signatory to the Lithuanian Declaration of Independence. From 1991 to 1992, he was a member of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania’s Reconstituted Seimas. From 1993 to 2003: a member of the Lithuanian Liberal Union – from 1996 to 1999 and from 2001 to 2003, its chairman. Since 2003, he has been the vice-chairman of the Liberal and Centre Union. From 1997 to 2001 – the mayor of Klaipėda. From March to July 2001 –the Republic of Lithuania’s Minister of Economics. From June to July 2001, he was the Republic of Lithuania’s caretaker Prime Minister. Since October 2001, he has been the chairman of the social organization “Liberal reforms”.

In June 2004, the Liberal and Centre Union elected E. Gentvilas to the European Parliament for the term 2004-2009.

E. Gentvilas is the author of about twenty scientific and about five hundred published articles. In 2004, the publishing house “Versus aureus” published the book of Dr A.Gentvilas Politiko duona (The Politician’s bread).
