Engineer, journalist, and publicist Liūtas Mockūnas (1934 to 2007) belonged to the Santara-Šviesa federation and was an editor of weekly Akiračiai.

He was born into the family of a war pilot. In 1944, his parents and he moved to Germany where he studied from Kempten Lithuanian gymnasium. After five years, he moved to the USA. In 1959, he graduated from Drexel Technological University in Philadelphia, and from 1959 to 1986, he worked in Chicago as an engineer consultant (a coal transport specialist) at power plant engineering enterprises.

While living in Chicago, he attended literature lectures, although he never sought a formal scientific degree. He actively participated in Lithuanian emigrants’ cultural activities, contributed in the periodicals Margutis, Metmenys, and Akiračiai. From 1969, he was a member of Akiračiai’s editorial staff. While belonging to the Santara-Šviesa federation, he participated in the program Veidu į Lietuvą (Faces towards Lithuania) and he transported emigrants’ books and periodicals to occupied Lithuania.

In 2005, L. Mockūnas returned to Lithuania, actively engaged in cultural activities and helped to relocate the journal Akiračiai to Lithuania.
