Professor Norbertas Vėlius (1938-1996) was a folklorist and an expert on Baltic mythology. He worked at the Institute of Lithuanian Language and Culture at Vilnius University. N. Vėlius was the chairman of the Council for the Protection of Ethnic Lithuanian culture, an initiator and a leader of many expeditions organized by the association for monument protection and regional studies, and an author and co-author of many books. He inspired the ethnic Lithuanian culture movement that began in the 1950s.

In 2005, the publishing house “Versus aureus“ published the revised edition of N. Vėlius’ “the mythological sagas of Lithuanian folk”.
