In 1972, art critic Rūta Guzevičiūtė graduated from the former Fine Arts Institute (now the Fine Arts Academy) and continued her studies at the Moscow Textile Institute studying objective costume modeling. In 1977, she defended her thesis on Stabilių požymių XX a. rūbų modeliavime analizė (The analysis of stable features in outfit modeling of the 20th century). In 1995, after the Lithuanian science council recognized the diploma from the Moscow Textile Institute, R. Guzevičiūtė became a Doctor of humanitarian sciences. Since 1980, she has been a member of Lithuanian Artist’s Association. She has created costumes for Lithuanian Television for teleplays (the last one – Valdovas (The Sovereign). She also created costumes for the ancient music and dance ensembles “Banchetto musicale” in Vilnius and “Pawanilia” in Warsaw. From 1996 to 1999 she was a judge in the international fashion festival “In VOGUE Vilnius”. She often advises the Gudyn Restoration Centre on the questions of outfit restoration. Since 1976, she has been lecturing at higher education institutions. From 1976 to 1989, R. Guzevičiūtė lectured at the National Institute of Fine Arts. From 1980 to 1981, she worked on probation in France, at the Paris Institute of Applied Art. From 1993 to 1998, she worked at Vytautas Magnum University (senior assistant, senior lecturer). In 2001, she lectured at Klaipėda University. From 2001 to 2002 and currently, she leads the diploma works of bachelor students in the Department of Art History and Theory at the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts. Since 1989, she has worked as a research worker in the Ethnology division at Lithuanian Institute of History.

Her main scholarly interests: the formation and development of historic costumes in Europe, in Lithuania; the semblance of outfits expressed attitudes in regard to various historic events and situations; the reflection of ethnic identity through the costume in the different ethnic groups in the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

In 2006 the publishing house “Versus aureus” published the monograph of R. Guzevičiūtė Tarp Rytų ir Vakarų: XVI-XIX a. LDK bajorų kostiumo formavimo aplinkybės ir pavidalai (Between East and West: the noblemen costume’s formation, shapes and circumstances in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the XVI-XIX century).
