The book is about Antanas Mackevičius, the leader of the 1863 uprising and the parson of Paberžė (Panevėžys district), who died for his and our freedom. For ten years he described to people the essence of czarist oppression – the exploitation of man and the necessity to fight against tyranny. When the uprising started, he drew his gun and became one of the uprising’s most famous leaders.
The book draws attention to the origins and causes of the uprising, its leadership, the rebels’ munitions, supply, and dispensation of justice. Led by A. Mackevičius, the book describes the rebel’s battle with the Russian army. The book’s appendixes give the most important dates in the life and activities of А. Mackevičius: a chronology of the main events in Lithuania in 1863, the rebels’ activities and fights, sources and literature used, indexes of personal and place names, and summaries in Polish, Russian, and English.
The book is richly illustrated with photographs.
I love my Lithuania, I handed over to it my feeble strength… My actions were led by justice and love for my nation.
Antanas Mackevičius
