Lithuanian scene in the USA 1889-1990
It is the second book of articles by Bronius Vaškelis. The selection of articles published in 2004 by the publishing house “Versus aureus” was dedicated to the history of Lithuanian literature, and this book is dedicated to the history of Lithuanian emigrants’ theatre. Until now this theme has not been more broadly analyzed in Lithuania; the new book presents the stages of Lithuanian theatre in emigration: the beginning of Lithuanian theatre in the USA in 1889-1899, the review of Lithuanian satire theatre, the main aspects of activity and gatherings of the Lithuanian Drama theatre in Chicago in 1949-1990. Part of the book’s articles are devoted to the personalities of playwrights, stage-managers and actors – to Bronius Vargšas-Laucevičius, Jurgis Blekaitis, Henrikas Kačinskas, theatrical gatherings and organizations that for a longer or shorter time existed in emigration, also to the hitherto un-researched activity of Juozas Vaičkus’ theatre in the USA and to the history of its staging in America.
