Active since 1947 and uniting all Lithuanians in the United Kingdom, the Lithuanian Association in Great Britain (Didžiosios Britanijos lietuvių sąjunga, DBLS) has celebrated its 60th anniversary. On that occasion, at a conference held in London on September 29, 2007, there arose the idea of publishing a book dedicated to the history of Lithuanians living in Great Britain.
This is that book. In it various authors survey important periods and events in the history of Great Britain's Lithuanians and analyse the latter's cultural and political activities as well as their efforts to preserve Lithuanian identity in a foreign land. In addition to papers by scholars working in Lithuania, the books contains essays – based not only on historical sources but also on their authors' personal experience acquired in the course of their extensive political and cultural activities in the United Kingdom – by contributors living there (Romas Kinka, Aleksas Vilčinskas, Vida Gasperienė, Jaras Alkis, and Živilė Ilgūnienė). The authors hope that this volume will contribute to the strengthening of Lithuanian historical consiciuosness both in the United Kingdom and in Lithuania even as it stimulates further research and the appearance of new books.
