Vladas Žulkus was born on April 16, 1945, in Telšiai.
From 1962 to 1964, he studied at the Vilnius branch of Kaunas Polytechnic Institute. From 1969 to 1990, he worked at the Institute of Monument Conservation’s Klaipėda division. In 1976, he graduated with a History degree from Vilnius University. In 1988, at the Institute of Archaeology in the Science Academy of the USSR, he defended the thesis, Klaipėda ir jos regionas XI-XVII amžiais (Klaipėda and its region in the XI-XVII centuries) for a Science degree. In 1993, his degree was raised to the degree of Doctor of humanitarian sciences (history). Until 1992, he was a director of Klaipėda’s Lithuania Minor history museum. In 1992, he started to work as a senior research fellow in the History Centre of western Lithuania and Prussia at Klaipėda University. From 1993 to 1997, he was the centre’s director and lectured at the Department of History. On September, 1999, at the Lithuanian History Centre, he defended his Doctorate on the theme, Kuršiai vakarinių baltų geležies amžiaus kultūroje ir visuomenėj“ (The Curonians in the Iron Age culture and society of the western Balts). In 2001, the board of Vilnius University granted him a professorship endowment. In 2002, he was elected rector of Klaipėda University.
His scholarly interests include: the culture of the western Balts, the cultural relations of the Balts-Scandinavians, the archaeology of medieval towns, and underwater archaeology.
In 2004, the publishing house “Versus aureus” published the monograph of V. Žulkus, Kuršiai Baltijos jūros erdvėje (Curonians in the area of the Baltic sea).
