Lithuanian politician, “publican”, historian of art, music and culture Vytautas Landsbergis was born on October 18, 1932, in Kaunas.
In 1952, while studying, he started to work as an educator and continued to do so until 1990. He taught grand piano at the M. K. Čiurlionis music school, the Lithuanian Conservatory and at affiliated Conservatory departments in Klaipėda and the Vilnius Pedagogical Institute. In 1969, he defended his Doctoral thesis on the creative work of composer M. K. Čiurlionis, M. K. Čiurlionio kompozitoriaus kūryba. From 1978 to 1990, he was a professor at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and in 1994, earned his Doctorate. V. Landsbergis – politician, the historian of art, music and culture, has published about thirty books that first of all venerated the works of M. K. Čiurlionis, and in later years – Lithuanian and international political questions. He edited and published all the works of M. K. Čiurlionis for grand piano. For years, he was a member of the Executive Board and Secretariat of the Lithuanian Composers’ Union and he continues to be the chairman of the M. K. Čiurlionis Society.
In 1988, the professor was elected to the initiative Group of the Lithuanian Reform Movement "Sąjūdis", and during the Sąjūdis Founding Congress on October 22–23, he was elected to the Sąjūdis Seimas (Assembly) and Seimas Council. From 1988 to 1990, he was the chairman of the Sąjūdis Seimas Council, and since December 15th, 1991 he holds the title of Honorary Chairman of Sąjūdis. On March 11, 1990, he was elected the chairman of the Supreme Council of Lithuania and presided over the session of Parliament, which on that day, proclaimed the restoration of the independent Republic of Lithuania. During the elections of 2000, he was elected, for the fourth time, to the Lithuanian Parliament and until 2004; he was a member of the Lithuanian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Baltic Assembly. From 2003 to 2004, Vytautas Landsbergis was an observer to the European Parliament, and since 2004, he as been a member of European Parliament.
In 2006 the publishing house “Versus aureus” published a book of poetry by V. Landsbergis, Istorijos blyksniai: lyrika ir epas (The flashes of history: lyrics and epic).
